Celebrating 60 Years of Medicaid and the Vital Role of Community Health Centers

August 2025 | National Health Center Week

This week, we joined health care leaders, advocates, and fellow community health centers in celebrating National Health Center Week and the 60th anniversary of Medicaid—two major milestones that have transformed health care access for communities across the nation.

As part of the celebration, our team had the honor of attending a special press conference at Central City Community Health Center, hosted by Coalition OC and supported by a coalition of dedicated partners. The event commemorated 60 years since the founding of Medicaid, a federal program created in 1965 to ensure that low-income individuals and families could access the care they need. In California, that program is known as Medi-Cal, and it currently serves over 15 million people—making it one of the most critical health safety nets in the state.

At the same time, we celebrated the impact of Community Health Centers, which were also born from the same era of social justice and health equity efforts. Today, health centers like Celebrating Life Community Health Center provide comprehensive, affordable care to more than 30 million Americans annually—many of whom are covered by Medi-Cal.

Our presence at this event was a reminder of the power of partnership and advocacy. We are proud to stand alongside our fellow Coalition OC members and the following organizations, who helped bring this event to life:

  • California Health Care Foundation

  • The California Endowment

  • The California Wellness Foundation

  • California Primary Care Association

  • Archstone Foundation

  • Blue Shield of California Foundation

  • AltaMed Health Services

Together, we recommitted ourselves to protecting and strengthening Medicaid, advocating for continued support of Community Health Centers, and ensuring that all individuals—regardless of income, background, or immigration status—have access to the care they need to thrive.

This week isn’t just a celebration—it’s a call to action. Medicaid has stood for 60 years because people fought for it. As we look ahead, we must continue to advocate for equity, access, and dignity in health care.

Stay connected with us as we continue sharing stories, photos, and reflections throughout National Health Center Week.

Because at Celebrating Life Community Health Center, we believe everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for.
